 Temporary Exhibitions

The temporary exhibitions that the Museum presents each season seek to bring Latin American and international artists and works closer to the community, complementing the permanent collection’s communicational and educational role. During our first three years, our labor has relied upon invaluable support from a demanding public, and enthusiastic collaboration from the journalists and critics of the press and mass media. Steadfast support from other institutions and private collectors has allowed us to develop an exhibition policy that includes eighteen shows already brought to fruition.

Every season combines exhibitions of Argentinean art, Latin American and international art, Modern, and Contemporary art, encompassing the different techniques, materials and supports elaborated by the visual arts since the beginning of the 20th Century. These include exhibitions produced solely by Malba, those co-produced with other institutions, or itinerant shows. The Museum works with local and international curators, participating in the discussion of every project in order to ensure the best possible results down to the final detail. Six exhibitions are held yearly, each accompanied by a catalog and a didactic brochure that is distributed free of charge. Chiefly from 2003, Malba has been keen to explore and move into the area of publications, to help produce and circulate ideas and debate from and about art, especially that of Argentina and the surrounding region. Among the most important exhibitions to have been presented at Malba, the following can be highlighted:

Lasar Segall, un expresionista brasileño. (Lasar Segall, a Brazilian Expressionist) FromJuly 11 to September 15, 2002. First-time presentation of the work of one of Brazil’s principal Modern artists in Buenos Aires.

Artistas modernos rioplatenses en Europa 1911/1924. La experiencia de la vanguardia. (Modern Artists from Río de la Plata in Europe 1911/1924. The Avant Garde Experience) From October 17, 2002 to January 27, 2003. Group exhibition that juxtaposed the work of six artists with key roles in Latin American art history: Rafael Barradas and Joaquín Torres-García, from Uruguay and Norah Borges, Pablo Curatella Manes, Emilio Pettoruti and Alejandro Xul Solar, from Argentina.

Geo-metrías. Abstracción geométrica latinoamericana en la colección Cisneros. (Geo-metries. Latin American Geometric Abstraction in the Cisneros Collection) From March 14 to May 19, 2003. Guillermo Kuitca. Obras 1982-2002. (Guillermo Kuitca. Works 1982-2002) From June 5 to August 18, 2003. The return of Argentina’s most famous artist worldwide, following almost twenty years since his last exhibition in the country. One hundred thousand visitors turned this into one of the most successful cultural events in recent years.

Jorge de la Vega. Obras 1961-1971. (Jorge de la Vega. Works 1961-1971) From November 14, 2003 to February 3, 2004. The exhibition of Jorge de la Vega’s work, artist, singer/songwriter, star of the café concert scene, an icon of pop and the ‘60s, unfolded his paintings, prints, drawings, collages and songs to the public. Malba brought together the most important pieces from his production, carried out between Buenos Aires, Paris and New York.

Soñando con los ojos abiertos. Dada y surrealismo en la colección de Vera y Arturo Schwarz, Museo de Israel, Jerusalén. (Open Eye Dreaming. Dada and Surrealism in the Vera and Arturo Schwarz Collection, Museum of Israel, Jerusalem) From March 12 to May 17, 2004. Without a doubt one of the most relevant cultural events to take place in recent years. It was an honor for Malba to present an exhibition that united key works by two of the 20th Century’s most significant creators: fifty pieces by Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray, on display along with other fundamental works from the Dada and Surrealist movements, in Argentina for the first time.

Glauber Rocha: del hambre al sueño. Obra, política y pensamiento. (Glauber Rocha: from hunger to dreams. Works, Thought and Politics) From April 17 to May 25, 2004. Los usos de la imagen: fotografía, film y video en La Colección Jumex. (The Use of Images: photography, film and video from the Jumex Collection) From September 29 to November 22, 2004.
